2027 - The Year of the Value Exchange

13 October 2026 · Steven Brown · 4 min read

Is affiliate marketing moving beyond simple transaction counting to a deeper appraisal of mutual strategic value?

As we reflect on 2026, measurement dominated industry conversations — from tracking health, script compliance, and user consent to the complexities of Media Mix Modelling (MMM) and AI measurement. Looking ahead to 2027, a new primary theme is emerging for affiliate marketing: the Value Exchange.

While affiliate marketing has always been built on a trade-off between publisher effort and advertiser reward, the industry has pretty-much accepted that it can no longer just rely on the traditional mechanics of last-click CPA accounting for determining the reward to publishers in most circumstances. As the nature of online publishing has matured, the last-click CPA model no longer fully reflects the fair value created between partners.

Rewarding vs. Measuring True Value

In the early days of affiliate marketing, measurement of value began simply with transaction counting (with the reward on an amount or commission per transaction). Over time, advertisers began looking at basket sizes, publisher categories, where the publisher was perceived to be in the 'marketing funnel', and customer demographics to better understand the value of the activity.

During 2005 to 2015, and years before and after, specialised publishers with small numbers of key advertiser partners (such as UK Web Media, Broadband Choices, and Broadband Genie) dealt directly with brand teams, agreeing on monthly planning, homepage takeovers, and strategic tenancy arrangements. Those early value-added arrangements recognized that driving value through the affiliate channel was about more than just a last-click conversion - it was about targeted reach, positioning, and brand exposure.

For most publishers, however, network tracking remained the primary operational settlement tool: counting transactions at the end of the month to calculate commission based on predefined metrics like percentage of basket or Cost Per Acquisition (CPA), and often tiered according to volume.

Today, both advertisers and publishers are asking a more fundamental question: Is the value exchange in this partnership appropriate and compelling for both businesses in 2027 and beyond?

Why CPA Alone No Longer Cuts It

The commercial realities of modern digital marketing mean that relying solely on a post-activity CPA as a model is outdated:

  • Top-of-Funnel and Decision-Point Influence: Content publishers, closed-user groups (such as Blue Light Card), and cashback/voucher innovators (like TopCashback with their newly-launched product comparison tool) deliver value at critical decision-making stages. A simple CPA may fail to reward upper-funnel presence or high-intent audience access, and certainly isn't a good basis for measurement of the value of the relationship.
  • Hybrid Commercial Models: To complement CPA, tenancy fees and bespoke commercial packages are increasingly used to reward publishers for brand exposure and placement where click to sales attribution is delayed, absent, or recognised as insufficient.
  • The Impression importance in MMM: Media Mix Models have preferred input approaches and welcome top-down spend and impression data over specific timeframes. Because affiliate networks traditionally report downstream conversion data rather than granular impression and exposure metrics, affiliate activity is often mischaracterized as "inelastic" by econometric models. (The APMA working party in the UK is currently investigating this impression challenge).
  • AI Search and Zero-Click Citations: Large Language Models (LLMs) and AI search engines rely heavily on publisher content to answer user queries. When AI engines synthesize publisher content to recommend brand products, value is generated for the advertiser without a traditional referral click ever taking place.

Industry Innovation: Networks Step Up

Recognizing this shift, major affiliate networks are soft-launching and expanding dedicated technology suites designed to measure and reward value beyond the traditional click. Partnerize has introduced Vantage Point and Nyorda/Tradedoubler have launched Emna to help partners quantify mutual value exchanges. Impact.com, CJ and Awin have similar initiatives, and continue to expand pilots and tools aimed at recognizing non-click contributions and AI citations.

What This Means for 2027

To navigate 2027 successfully, our belief is that affiliate marketers must focus on three core pillars:

  • Spot-On Deterministic Tracking: High-quality measurement infrastructure (including server-to-server tracking, best-practice memory-setting scripts, and reliable user consent handling) remains the essential foundation. Without reliable underlying data, any value exchange appraisal is built on inaccurate data and the value delivered by publishers to advertisers is most likely not being measured accurately, even by the technology expected to do so.
  • Incorporating Impression and Exposure Data: Capturing impression data will allow affiliate performance to feed more accurately into brand-side analytics and MMM frameworks.
  • Building on the trust that underpins good affiliate marketing: Well-implemented affiliate tracking offers clean, deterministic data. This is a bedrock for trust to be formed between all parties and confidence in the relationship to grow. Building such mutual trust in this data enables brands and publishers to move away from short-term transactional deals toward sustainable, long-term strategic relationships.
